Who runs it and where the tours happen

Klinkhamer Sheltering Sky Productions is the website of Michael Klinkhamer, an Amsterdam-born photographer and journalist who runs his own photography tours and workshops under the name Cambodia Photo Tours. He guides the tours himself; the site does not describe a separate team of guides, although the Dutch-language tours page writes in the plural ("we") about the business. On the homepage he calls himself a visual artist who moves between the Netherlands and Asia, making exhibitions, photography and visual projects, giving workshops and publishing magazines. His job description on the site lists three roles: professional photographer, journalist and photo tours organizer.

The tours have two home bases. The first is Phnom Penh in Cambodia, where the tours page says he began sharing his local finds with visiting photographers and tourists after moving there, and where a review on the site names a "Phnom Penh-Cambodia Private Photography Tours Full Day Experience." The second is Amsterdam, his home city, where the tours page says he has offered photo tours in summer since 2018. The same page says the workshops take place at locations in Amsterdam, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, and it mentions trips to Tonle Sap lake and through the jungles of the Cardamom mountains. Separately, portrait workshops are given from studios in Amsterdam and Groningen.

What the tours and workshops cover

The Dutch-language tours page, titled Exclusive photo trips and workshops in the Netherlands and Asia, sets out the pitch. It says the team are local residents who live where they photograph and professionals who love what they do, and that it offers to take guests to the best places for great photos with no short-cuts and no boring lessons. Instead, it promises to show many ways to make better photos, explain what a guest could improve, and let them watch how the guide works. The page claims plenty of professional experience in street photography and also in fashion, cars, portraits and landscapes, shared so that guests become better photographers along the way. It adds that there is no pressure and no need for dull lectures.

The Amsterdam tours are framed around visual storytelling. The page says guests can go out on the street looking for a photography experience, either to put together a short reportage or simply to let the city come to them, and that the guide will share technical and artistic advice and plenty of inspiration. The site's English navigation groups the Cambodia side as "Street and portrait Photography adventures Cambodia."

Portrait photography is the other strand. A long Dutch blog post on his archive of magazine portraits includes an offer of digital or analog film workshops in portrait photography, held as studio and location sessions from studios in Amsterdam and Groningen, with place, time and cost given on request. The same post shows the kind of work behind that teaching: portraits shot for Dutch magazines of politicians, writers, footballers and artists, and his cover photo of football coach Leo Beenhakker for the first Dutch edition of Esquire in 1990.

The photographer behind the tours

The tours page says the business started in 2013 out of a passion for, and experience in, photography, journalism and travel, and that the move to Cambodia came after more than 25 years of professional photography for magazines. A homepage section adds that he has worked internationally since 2008, mostly in Asia with Cambodia as his base, and also in China, Korea, the US and Australia. The homepage names publications too: HP/de Tijd, Quote, Esquire, Carros and Playboy for his portraits, and Carros and Auto motor en Sport for his automotive work, with press and media images for Porsche, Audi, Fiat Group, Alfa Romeo, Seat and Nikon Pro.

In Cambodia he also worked for aid organizations. An English blog post says that while living in the country from 2011 until 2020 he worked as a photographer and videographer on local and international NGO projects, naming Oxfam-Kinderpostzegels and the Cambodian Children's Fund, and describes a 2015 video clip shot in Pursat province for the Dutch children's stamps foundation. He writes that "The reality of my commitment is to show respect and pay attention to those in need and SEE them!" The homepage gives the NGO period as 2013 to 2020 and a later book as covering 2012 to 2020, so the dates on the site do not line up exactly.

His publications grow out of the tours. The homepage says the Portraits of Cambodia magazine holds a large selection of Cambodian portraits, with a section on meetings with monks and novices in Buddhist temples, and that the magazine is part of the Cambodia Photo Tours workshops. A Cambodia Photo Tours Magazine collects work from the photo walks, including portraits, landscapes, temple life, Phnom Penh, Angkor Wat, the Mekong and Cambodian mysticism. The site also shows CHAM, dedicated to the people of Chroy Changvar on the Mekong in Phnom Penh, KEP RAW, a black and white magazine from an artist residency in Kep in 2026, and the book Lust for Life, a selection of more than 100 smartphone photos from Cambodia that the homepage dates to August 2026.

Booking and contact

Booking starts with a contact form inviting a no-obligation message about photo trips, workshops or other questions. It asks for a phone number and the size of the group, with a dropdown that runs from 1 to 20 and then 20-30, 30-50 and more than 50, plus a comment field for the details of the request. The tours page links to reviews on Tripadvisor, and the homepage shows one review headed "Fantastic Tour from a Knowledgeable Photographer."

The tours page gives no prices, tour lengths, start times, meeting points or group sizes, no dates for the Southeast Asia workshops, and no booking, payment or cancellation terms. It also does not say which language a tour is guided in. The tours page itself is in Dutch, while the Cambodia and portrait blog posts and part of the navigation are in English.

Who it suits

The strength here is the photographer himself: decades of magazine portraiture, years of living and shooting in Phnom Penh, and a steady output of magazines and books drawn from those walks. That makes the tours a good match for photographers who want to work on street, portrait or reportage photography with someone who knows Phnom Penh or Amsterdam from the inside, and for those interested in a studio portrait workshop in the Netherlands. Travelers who want a fixed schedule and a posted price before they get in touch will need to ask for both, since every detail of a tour is arranged by message.
