Private Photography Tours Across Portugal

Lisbon Photo runs its own private photography tours and workshops in Portugal, led by its owner, the photographer Miguel Helfrich. The homepage says the areas covered are Lisbon, Sintra, Obidos and Porto, and that it also organizes street photography workshops for international groups. The footer dates the business from 2014, and the team page lists a Portuguese tourism registration, RNAAT 244/2014. Prices are in euros.

The team page describes Miguel as born in Lisbon and raised in Lisbon and Porto, with a Portuguese mother and a German father, speaking Portuguese, English, some Spanish and a bit of German. His curriculum lists professional photography since 1999 on land and underwater, work as an underwater photography instructor and judge and a land photography instructor, freelance work for Portuguese magazines including Volta ao Mundo and Rotas e Destinos, and the photography books imersus and a walk at the town of Soure. He has also been photography manager at Planeta d'Agua magazine, the travel agencies O Peixe Voador and Proxima Viagem and the Bestdive diving school, and founded the IMAGEM GURU project. The homepage bills Lisbon Photo as "THE BEST-RATED PHOTOGRAPHY TOURS IN LISBON" and says "Ten years of market leadership in Portugal is the best business card you can show," promising "expert photography advice, image composition, new perspectives and coaching."

The Tour Range and Prices

The photo tours page says all tours are private and can be tailored, and that prices are fixed per tour "regardless of the number of persons attending, photographers or companions," with Sintra the exception. Groups of more than 5, including corporate and team-building events, get prices on request.

The Lisbon Day Tour runs as a half day of about 4 hours for 120 EUR or a full day of about 8 hours for 180 EUR. Typical themes are "doors & windows, tiles, trams and people," in Alfama, Mouraria, Castelo, Baixa, Chiado, Bairro Alto and Bica, with highlights such as the yellow tram, laundry drying and the black and white cobblestone sidewalks. Any lens from 20mm to 200mm works. The Lisbon Night Tour, 120 EUR, includes sunset and blue hour depending on the season, Chiado by night and Oriente, "the new modern science-fiction district," with an ideal lens range of 24mm to 80mm.

The Kids and Family Tour, 120 EUR and limited to one family, lasts about 3 hours. The family gets a map and a road-book of hints and riddles, the kids take the photos for a challenge of nine well-taken pictures and collect a stamp for each goal, and the page suggests smartphones. Parents lead the route with help from the guide, and each challenge comes with an explanation of the place, so the family learns about the old streets as it goes.

Outside Lisbon, the Sintra Photo Tour starts early to avoid the crowds, with Pena Palace in the morning and Monserrate Palace in the afternoon, priced by group size: 200 EUR for 1, 220 EUR for 2, 240 EUR for 3 and 260 EUR for 4, all per tour. The Obidos Photo Tour, 220 EUR for up to 4, begins with an early transfer of about 75 minutes to the walled medieval town and covers color and black and white work. The Porto Photo Tour is a 2-day urban exploration in three sessions (an afternoon, that evening and the next morning), including a walk across the Douro to Gaia for the skyline, for 310 EUR in total.

How the Tours Work

The day tour page gives the timings: mornings from 8:00 to 12:00, afternoons from 14:00 to 18:00, and full days from 8:00 until 17:00, adjustable "to season and to your agenda." The family tour starts at 8:00 or 14:00, or a little later such as 9:00 or 15:00. The meeting point is Praça Dom Pedro IV, better known as Rossio Square, at the southern of its two fountains, and the site says it can meet at a guest's hotel downtown if that makes sense for the route.

The tours are mostly on foot; on a full day the Metro may be used, but the page says "chances are it will be just walking, because we can rest every time we want/need." The family walk is described as relaxed, with stops when the kids need a break. Companions are welcome: the site says non-photographers "will have a great time doing team-work with you," using their own small camera or phone, and the photo tours page includes coaching on camera settings and photo editing for smartphones, on iOS and Android, with Lightroom and Snapseed. Along the way Miguel adds short stories on Lisbon's history and food ("Yes, we like to eat"), and the photo tours page says most tours are sustainable and carbon free, with Sintra an exception for its transfers.

The homepage welcomes beginners, intermediate and advanced photographers and lists styles to focus on, from street, urban, architecture and minimalist photography to color, black and white, and smartphone editing. It frames the teaching around "Less is more" and "keep it simple": beginners learn to use the camera and the basics of composition, intermediate photographers work on settings and composition, and the homepage adds that even top professionals have something new to learn. On the day tour page, Miguel suggests switching the camera to monochrome, saying that although people love colors, they should try a black and white approach and be surprised by the results.

Booking and What Stays Open

Each tour has a Book Now button, and larger groups use the booking form. The menu also lists a workshop, corporate options, a black and white tour, an art shop, a magazine and FAQs. The tour pages do not set out payment, deposit or cancellation terms, minimum ages for the adult tours, or accessibility for travelers with limited mobility, and the homepage carries an Awards heading without naming any award or showing a review count or rating.
