A kayak shop one block from Kailua Beach

Kailua Beach Adventures runs its own guided kayak tours, self-guided paddle packages and beach rentals from a single shop at 130 Kailua Road in Kailua, on the eastern (windward) shore of Oahu, Hawaii. The site places the shop one block from Kailua Beach Park and calls it "the only Kayak shop walking distance to Kailua Beach," adding that Kailua is 30 minutes from Honolulu and Waikiki Beach. Every trip it sells starts there and stays in and around Kailua Bay: the paddles go to Popoia ("Flat Island"), Lanikai Beach and the Mokulua "Twin Islands." The company describes itself as "the most complete water sports company in Hawaii." If your plans are on another Hawaiian island, or on Oahu's North Shore or south coast, this is not the operator for that: the site covers Kailua and nothing else.

Tours, rentals and the day pass

The tour page sorts its kayak trips by activity level, from guided and relaxed to guided and demanding to do-it-yourself, and the menu adds a self-guided stand-up paddle tour and SUP lessons.

The 2hr kayak excursion is labeled "more relaxed / beginner friendly," with an activity level of light to moderate. The tour page lists it at $179 for adults (13+) and $159 for children aged 8 to 12, with younger children from age 5 joining only on a private tour. The English page gives the duration as 2.5 hours for a half-mile paddle plus beach time before and after, and a group size of 8 max. The Japanese page describes the same trip as a Japanese-guided tour to Popoia Island, about 500 meters and about 20 minutes of paddling each way depending on the weather, with water and snacks on the island followed by an eco-tour covering local history, the island's plants and animals, and Hawaiian environmental protection.

The Twin Islands kayak tour is the "action packed / adventure friendly" option, rated high for activity. The page lists it at $249 for adults (13+), with children from 8 on a private tour only, a duration of 5 hours and a 2.5-mile paddle, again capped at 8.

The self guided kayak discovery is for "independent explorer / Do-It-Yourself" paddlers: $99 for adults and $89 for children aged 3 to 12, with the site recommending at least 4 hours and including snorkel gear, lockers, bikes and dry bags. The Japanese page gives rough one-way paddling times of about 20 minutes to Popoia, about 40 minutes to Lanikai Beach and about 1 hour to the Mokulua Islands, weather permitting.

The Self Guided SUP Tour is the stand-up paddle version at $99 for adults and $89 for children aged 8 to 12. It includes board, paddle, leash and cart, island landing permits (not on Sundays), use of snorkel gear, beach mats, chairs, bicycles, boogie boards and a locker, plus a video briefing and personal recommendations. The itinerary shows check-in at 9:15 and paddling and beach time from 9:30 to 4:45, both marked flexible.

Rentals are listed separately: kayaks and paddleboards from $74, snorkel gear from $25, bicycles from $35, surfboards from $35 and body boards from $25. The homepage also sells a Day Pass at $59 for adults (13+) and $39 for children aged 3 to 12, with ages 1 to 2 free, bundling snorkel gear, chairs, umbrella, boogie boards, bikes, coolers, showers and lockers, with check-in from 8AM to 1PM and a stay until 5PM. The shop rents a small selection of prescription snorkel masks, and the menu also lists gear delivery, a military discount and a kama`aina rate.

How a day out works

Everything meets at the shop. The site lists free parking, carts to walk a kayak or board to the beach, showers, dressing rooms and lockers ($10), and says you do not need a car. For visitors staying in Waikiki, the tour page offers a roundtrip shuttle at $30 each for the 9:15 excursion or the 9AM Twin Islands tour, returning at 4pm. The Japanese page describes a Waikiki transfer package with hotel pickup between 7:30 and 8:30 in the morning, lunch included (a choice of Boston-style pizza, calzone, burger, salad or plate lunch) and departure from the shop at 15:00.

Guides and departures: the Japanese page says all guides hold CPR and first-aid qualifications and that one guide leads at most 8 guests. It lists a morning and an afternoon departure window, 9:45 to 12:15 and 12:00 to 2:30, and says which one runs is decided on the morning of the tour according to conditions.

Rules the site states: guided tour participants must be 8 or older and able to swim wearing a life jacket; guests aged 16 and under ride a tandem with someone 18 or older; the Japanese page gives a weight limit of under 130 kg; life jackets must be worn on the water, and the tour page adds that they are required for all snorkelers. On the SUP tour, participants under 18 must be with a parent or guardian, and everyone must be able to swim. The company itself says paddling "does require a moderate level of fitness," and that kayaks and boards go to the beach on a cart, a 5 to 10 minute walk.

Sundays are different. The site says no island landing permits are issued on Sundays, the Japanese page says tours are not currently running on Sundays, and the homepage advertises "$10 off sundays!"

Booking, cancellation and discounts

Booking is online through the site's Book Now buttons, and the phone line is 808-262-2555. The Japanese kayak page spells out the cancellation terms. For an added 8% travel insurance fee, a tour can be canceled or rescheduled for any reason up to 1 hour before the start, with a refund of the full amount minus the insurance cost and a processing fee. Without the insurance, a cancellation within 48 hours of the start is charged in full, and a change within 48 hours costs $25 per person. For rentals, a 6% damage waiver covers accidental damage to gear; without it, repair or replacement is the renter's cost, and damage from misuse is not covered either way. The English SUP page points to a separate FAQ and Policies page for rescheduling rules and weight restrictions.

Discounts listed on the site: the code ONLINE takes 10% off rentals and tours (the Japanese page excludes holidays and day passes), MIDWEEK15 takes 15% off Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday tours and rentals (day passes excluded), and BEACHCLEANUP takes 15% off a rental if you do a 20-minute beach cleanup first, arriving 30 minutes early; it does not apply to multi-day rentals. Tour guests also get 15% off in the retail shop, which stocks dry bags, custom Kailua t-shirts, swimwear from Tai Swim Co., prints from Vermilli and jewelry made by staff. Gift cards are on the menu.

Sustainability, gaps and who it suits

Conservation runs through the site. The company says it is "dedicated to sustainability, facilitating ongoing island restoration projects and beach clean ups," that its guides take part in wildlife sanctuary restoration, and that the shop hosts a marine plastics recycling station. The tour page carries a "3x Winner Eco-Tour Guide of the Year" badge credited to Sustainable Tourism Hawaii, without years.

A few things the site leaves open. The English pages do not say which languages guides speak on the English tours; only the Japanese page advertises a Japanese-speaking guide. The beginner excursion is listed at slightly different lengths on the English and Japanese pages (2.5 hours against 2 hours), so check the booking page for the time on your date. Private tour prices for younger children are not shown, and the site does not say how corporate or large groups are handled. The weight limits for rentals sit on a policies page rather than on the tour pages.

It suits visitors to Oahu who want a guided or self-guided paddle to the islands off Kailua with a small group, and who like having parking, showers and beach gear in one place. The Waikiki shuttle makes it workable without a rental car. It is not built for reef diving, boat snorkeling trips or a Sunday island landing, but for a day on Kailua Bay the site lays out its prices, rules and cancellation terms in unusual detail.
