Maui Eco Tours runs its own guided kayak and snorkel tours, water sports lessons and equipment rentals on Maui, Hawaii. The About page says it has been "Maui's premier kayak, snorkel, and water sports tours and rental since 1991", and its mailing address is a P.O. Box in Kihei. Tours run on two stretches of coast. In South Maui they launch from Makena Landing, where the site says Makena Bay and the nearby area known as Turtle Town hold a high concentration of Hawaiian green sea turtles, and from Ulua Beach in Wailea. In West Maui they start at Ukumehame Beach Park, which the site places less than 10 miles south of Lahaina town. Surf and SUP rentals are handed out at Kalama Park. Prices are in US dollars.

The company's defining promises are about scale and staying in the water with guests. The About page says "we never have more than 20 guests on the water, island-wide", and that 20 is a maximum that is "almost always substantially less". It also says its guides "physically get in the water and snorkel with you on each and every tour, every day". The page contrasts this with other outfitters whose guides stay in their kayaks, and it says the company's small, non-motorized kayaks reach spots the big tour boats cannot, boats it describes as each "carrying nearly 100 guests". On the South Maui Premier, the South Maui tours page says staff anchor the boats, gear guests up and lead a reef tour with Hawaiian legends along the way.

The kayak and snorkel tours

South Maui has the widest choice. Turtle Reef Discovery is the flagship: ages 5 and up, 2.5 to 4 hours, $109 per person, launching early in the morning from Makena Landing, with three morning trips that the page says have "slightly different requirements and details". The tour detail page lists a small group of "6 max", no prior experience needed, and includes an ocean kayak and paddle, snorkel gear and life jacket, a dry bag, a professional local guide and reef-safe sunscreen, with GoPro photos for purchase. South Maui Premier is a 4-hour trip to Makena Beach for ages 9 and up at $139. Wailea Coastline Discovery, for all ages, is a 2.5-hour paddle from Ulua Beach at $149. Around Makena, the Turtle Reef page adds, it is also common to see rays and dolphins and the Hawaiian monk seal. The Maui South Shore Explorer is described as a one-way private paddle past Wailea's resorts to Makena Bay, 3 hours at $199.

In West Maui, the West Side Snorkel Discovery runs 3 hours from Ukumehame over reefs where the page says honu may appear "if you're lucky". The Pali Sea Cliff Discovery Tour is the most demanding: 3 to 4 hours along the sea cliffs between Ukumehame and Papalaua, which the site says is "for advanced and adults paddlers only" and "most suitable for people who are physically fit". A Beach/Shoreline Snorkel and an Express Snorkel Tour round out the list, and a value package combines kayaking, snorkeling and a waterfall hike, described as "Paddle, explore coral reefs, and hike to Maui's stunning hidden waterfalls".

Whale season

In whale season the Turtle Reef Discovery becomes a whale watching trip by kayak, sold as Whale Watching Lahaina and Makena (South Maui) and Lahaina Whale Watch and Snorkel (West Maui). The South Maui page gives the season as late December to mid April and the trip as 3 hours, while the Turtle Reef page mentions humpbacks "during whale watching season (October through April)". The site says whales "tend to approach us more" because kayaks are quiet, adding "we don't approach them, they approach us", and that the trip still includes some snorkeling with turtles. The tour menu sums the Makena version up as a chance to "kayak off Lahaina and Makena to witness majestic humpback whales up close", and the site calls it one of its more popular winter trips.

Lessons and rentals

A Private SUP Tour at Makena Landing runs 2 hours at $169 per person with a local guide, and the page mentions views of Haleakalā and Molokini Crater. Prices are listed for most South Maui tours but not for the West Maui tours, and the three different Turtle Reef morning trips are not explained in detail.
