What Porto Walkers is and where it operates

Porto Walkers is a local tour company that runs its own walking, food and drink tours in Porto, Portugal, with its own guides. The banner on every page reads "TripAdvisor #1 - Local company, local guides, +11 years of experience in Porto!" and the homepage calls it "the city's most experienced local tour company." Everything on the site happens in Porto and, for the port wine tour, across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia, where the cellars are. The contact block gives only "Porto, Portugal," an email address (booking@portowalkers.pt) and a phone and WhatsApp line, +351 931 474 828. There are no multi-day trips; the longest product is a private day of 4 to 8 hours.

The tours

The site groups its range as free walking tours, eating and drinking tours, private tours, and corporate and group options. Three walks are listed in the tour menu: the Classical Free Walking Tour, pitched as a walk through "one of Europe's oldest cities" with viewpoints and hidden corners; the Porto Lifestyle Free Walking Tour, which covers the parts of the center that have changed most in recent years, the nightlife streets, the old business district and Lello Bookshop; and a Sunset Walking Tour from Cordoaria to Jardim do Morro. The Spanish-language page gives the most detail on the classical free tour: it starts at 10:45, lasts about 3 hours, and covers São Bento Station, Rua de Santa Catarina, Batalha, the Sé cathedral, the Luís I Bridge, the Barredo quarter and Ribeira, with river viewpoints along the way.

The Port Wine Tour, which the site calls "Our best selling tour!", runs every day at 15h00 and lasts 3h30 to 4h. It takes place in Gaia and involves about 1.5 km of walking in total. Guests visit 3 port wine venues and try 7 different port wines: 2 tastings at an operating historical cellar, 1 at a small producer's tasting venue, and 4 at a professional tasting room with a workshop on how to taste. The page is frank that "we cannot guarantee a certain port house," because the route changes with venue availability, and it tells guests to bring water and a snack. The tour page does not show its price in the text.

The Tapas & Vinho Verde Experience costs 65€, with an early-bird promo code for bookings made 15 days ahead. It runs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in English, from 11:30 until 15:00 or 15h30, over about 1.5 km. It starts at Mercado do Bolhão with the market vendors and moves on to a traditional tavern and 2 confeitarias for sweet and savory pastries. The price includes 15 different snacks and 4 traditional Portuguese wines (vinho verde), with non-alcoholic options, and the page warns that the tour "serves as a full lunch." The Porto Pubcrawl completes the paid list, promising guests will "learn to say 'Cheers' in 10 languages"; the menu also mentions bachelor and bachelorette parties and a New Year's pub crawl.

How it works on the day

Each tour has its own meeting point. The free tour meets at Praça da Liberdade by the statue of King Pedro IV, between the square and Avenida dos Aliados, and the Spanish page asks guests to arrive 10 minutes early and look for the team with a red umbrella and Porto Walkers shirts or jackets. The port wine tour meets at the entrance of the Luís I Bridge on the Porto side, lower level, by the 2 big pillars of the old suspension bridge. The food tour meets at the main entrance of Mercado do Bolhão, Rua Formosa 322. At both paid tours, staff wear a red t-shirt or jacket saying Porto Walkers.

The free tour is entirely outdoors, and the Spanish page says the roughly 3 km route "incluye algunas cuestas y escaleras" (includes some hills and stairs), so it recommends comfortable shoes. Places are limited and groups of more than 6 are not accepted on the free tour; larger groups are asked to arrange a private tour. The food tour is capped at 12 people and needs a minimum of 5 participants to run. The food page states that traditional Portuguese food "is not suitable for vegetarian/vegan, gluten/lactose intolerance" and asks guests to write in about allergies. The port wine page notes that port is a dessert wine, "sweet and strong." A guest review on the port wine page, the company's own selection, says that tour ends around sunset at a rooftop bar.

Booking, payment and cancellation

Reservations are required for the port wine and food tours, online or by email, and the free tour page asks guests to reserve a place. On the free tours there is no fixed price: each guest decides what to give at the end. Payment for paid tours is by credit card, PayPal, bank transfer or Revolut, and the food tour page adds N26 and cash. The cancellation rules are stated per tour. For the port wine tour: "Up to 48h before for full refund, Up to 24h before - partial refund." For the food tour: "Before 48h for full refund, Before 24 h - partial refund. No refund is possible within 24h."

Private tours are offered in Spanish and other languages. The private walking tour, up to 3 hours over about 3 to 5 km of the historic center, starts from 225€ per group of up to 10 people. The fuller private experience, which the site calls its most popular, runs 4 to 8 hours and can combine the city walk with tapas stops, wine tastings and an optional Gaia cellar visit. Private tours must be booked at least 7 days ahead and paid in full to confirm, and the price varies with group size and customization. Group requests go through a contact form that asks for group size, date and desired itinerary.

What the site leaves open

The site does not say how big the partial refund is between 24 and 48 hours. The port wine tour's price is not given on its page, and neither are the English departure times of the free tours; those sit in the booking calendar. The Sunset tour and the pub crawl have no times, prices or group sizes on these pages, and there is no word on children or accessibility beyond the free tour's warning about hills and stairs.

Porto Walkers suits visitors who want a free first walk through the old center, followed by a paid port tasting in Gaia or a market-and-tascas lunch with clear times, prices and cancellation rules. The fixed food-tour price and the 65€ lunch format make it easy to plan. Vegetarians should skip the food tour, as the company itself says, and groups of more than 6 will need a private booking.
