What Adventure South NZ offers and where it operates

Adventure South NZ runs its own small-group, guided active holidays in New Zealand, with cycling as its biggest line and hiking, kayaking and multi-activity trips alongside. The homepage says "For over 30 years, we've been creating active holidays in New Zealand's most outstanding locations," and the about page dates the start to 1992, when the company ran its first 4-day guided mountain bike trip through the Rainbow Valley "with one big red bus, a few bikes" and tents. It now describes "over 40 guided trips" and "the largest range of cycling trips in New Zealand." The destination menu covers both islands: on the South Island, Canterbury and Christchurch, Marlborough and Kaikoura, Nelson and Tasman, the West Coast, Queenstown and Wanaka, Aoraki/Mt Cook, Central Otago and Fiordland; on the North Island, Hawke's Bay, Wellington and Wairarapa, Manawatu and Whanganui, Taranaki, Waikato and Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, and Taupo and the Volcanic Plateau. It is part of the World Expeditions Travel Group. Prices are shown in New Zealand dollars.

The tour range

The site sorts trips into guided cycling (cycle trails, road cycling, mountain biking, gravel, electric bike and winter cycling), trekking and hiking, and multi-activity. The trip cards give duration, a grade and a starting price, for example:

  • Alps to Ocean Classic, a supported ride from the Southern Alps to the Pacific on "NZ's most popular Cycle Trail," 6 days, graded 3 Moderate, from $3895 NZD.
  • Alps to Ocean End to End, from Aoraki/Mt Cook to the ocean, 7 days, from $4695 NZD, plus a food-and-wine version, Tastes of the Alps to Ocean.
  • Best of South Island's Great Rides, 5 famous cycle trails in 8 days, from $5395 NZD, and the South Island Great Rides Explorer at 15 days, from $8695 NZD.
  • Coast to Coast NZ Bike Hike and Raft across the Southern Alps, 4 days, graded 5 Challenging, from $2995 NZD.
  • On foot, the Queen Charlotte and Abel Tasman Hike, 7 days, graded 1 Introductory and flagged family friendly, from $4995 NZD.

Other walking trips include the Milford, Hollyford and Stewart Island Trails, a Best of South Island Hike and Kayak with easy kayaking in the national parks, and a Best of Southern Alps Trek. The North Island has a Timber Trail, Waikato and Great Lake cycle through the central plateau and Rotorua's Whakarewarewa Forest, and the South Island adds the Kaikoura & Molesworth High Country Cycle. The homepage announces a new Kawarau Gorge Trail opening on 25 October, three connected trails through Central Otago's river gorges. The webinar page describes the Alps 2 Ocean as a 301 km journey and the Otago Central Rail Trail as needing "No special skills," with gentle gradients throughout. The FAQ adds that the company runs one self-guided trip, on the Otago Central Rail Trail, with a partner company in Clyde.

How the trips run

The FAQ is detailed. Guides are with the group "from the time you arrive until the time your trip concludes," and trips include a support vehicle, accommodation, most meals, snacks, maps and pre-departure information. "The maximum group size is 14," with groups of 4 to 14 in general, and the company provides 2 guides on trips with 8 or more travelers: on cycling trips one rides with the group and one drives the vehicle, which riders can hop into at its next access point if they need a rest. Accommodation is a mix of 3-4 star family-run motels, heritage stays, lodges, backcountry huts, farmstays and hotels, described on each trip page. Breakfast is included daily and most lunches and dinners too.

On fitness, the FAQ says trips "can be undertaken by anyone in a reasonable state of health and fitness," that every trip is graded, and that guests should talk to the team about a trip's physical demands. It asks guests to pack waterproofs and layers, avoiding cotton, and sends a full gear list before departure. Many Cycle Trail trips, it says, suit families with children over 2, with bike trailers and trail-a-bikes available for younger riders and discounts usually available for children under 15 sharing a room. Guests can bring their own bikes; bike hire is not in the trip price. Trips run from October to May, winter trips from July to September, and private group tours year-round. On timing, the FAQ notes that the weather is warmest from December to February and the trails are quieter in November and April.

The homepage sums up the guiding approach as taking guests "away from the crowds" to "an authentic side of New Zealand you won't see from the seat of a bus." The about page quotes a Canadian guest who says that after "more than 20 guided bike trips over the past 30 years," this one ranked first; it is the company's own pick of feedback. Each trip also carries a carbon footprint figure under the group's responsible travel program, which the site notes excludes flights.

Booking and support

Bookings and questions go to the team by phone on 1800 10 70 60, 0800 00 11 66 or +64 3 9421 222, or by email. Solo travelers on guided trips are matched with a same-gender roommate on a twin share, and a single supplement applies for a private room. The site offers pre- and post-tour accommodation, private group tours, brochures, on-demand webinars hosted by its guides, and an SMS deals list. The team page introduces staff including general manager Angela Sexton, who has over 16 years of guiding experience, and operations manager Jessica Halsey.

What the site leaves unclear

The FAQ and about pages do not give deposits, payment timing or cancellation and refund terms; those sit in the booking conditions. The bike hire price is not stated, and meal inclusions vary by trip, so the trip notes need reading. Guide certifications are not described. The site does not spell out how the grades translate into daily distance or climbing on these pages.

Adventure South NZ suits riders and walkers who want a fully guided, fully supported New Zealand trip in a small group, with the option to rest in the van, and families on the easier cycle trails. Travelers who want to ride independently have only the one self-guided Otago option.
