Where Australian Cycle Tours operates and what it runs
Australian Cycle Tours runs its own cycling holidays, mostly self-guided, in Australia, with a handful of rides on New Zealand's Otago Central Rail Trail. The about page calls it "a specialist cycling oufit focussing on self guided cycling experience through classic Australian landscapes" and "a division of the World Expeditions Travel Group," and the homepage headline promises "40+ Bike Tours." Its destination menu covers New South Wales (Central West, Country NSW, Snowy Mountains, South Coast, Southern Highlands, Tweed Valley), Queensland, South Australia (Barossa and Clare Valleys), Victoria (Gippsland, Great Ocean Road, High Country) and Western Australia's southwest. Canada, Europe and the USA appear on the site only through sister brands in the same group, such as Great Canadian Trails, UTracks and North America Active, which sell their own trips. Prices are shown in Australian dollars, and in New Zealand dollars for some Otago rides.
The company describes itself as "the pioneers of self guided active travel in Australia." Its parent, World Expeditions, has run cycling tours and expeditions since 1975, and the media page says World Expeditions was voted Adventure Travel company of the year at the 2019 Travel Awards.
The range of rides
The site sorts trips by style (self-guided, supported and guided, plus multi-activity, private group and solo traveler options) and by theme (rail trails, food and wine, family, electric bikes, center-based and deluxe stays). The trip grading page lists much of the catalog with durations, grades and starting prices. Examples from it:
- Northern Rivers Rail Trail Cycle, self-guided, 3 days, grade 3 Introductory, from $650 AUD.
- Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail Downhill Edition, self-guided, 5 days, grade 3, from $1170 AUD, pitched as the trail "without any of the hills!"
- Brisbane Valley Rail Trail Self Guided Cycle, 4 days, grade 5 Moderate, from $1250 AUD, on what the site calls Australia's longest rail trail.
- Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail Supported Cycle, 6 days, grade 5, from $2100 AUD.
- Munda Biddi Southern Cycle between Albany and Walpole, guided, 6 days, grade 5, from $3895 AUD.
- Great Ocean Road Cycle, self-guided, 7 days, grade 6 Moderate to Challenging, from $2050 AUD.
- Kosciuszko to the Sea, 8 days, grade 6, and its reverse, Sea to Kosciuszko from Tathra, 8 days, grade 7 Challenging, both from $2530 AUD.
- Best of Classic Otago Rail Trail from Wedderburn to Clyde in New Zealand, 2 days, grade 3, from $590 NZD.
Beyond the rail trails, the NSW list includes wine-country rides around Mudgee, a Capertee Valley trip described as exploring "the world's widest and longest enclosed valley by bike," the Central West Cycle Trail in full and shorter editions, and coastal rides from Thirroul or Kiama to Huskisson on Jervis Bay. In Victoria there are the Great Victorian and East Gippsland rail trails, and a supported trip through the Snowy River country of Far East Gippsland.
The site says every Australian trip includes the bike, app navigation, baggage transfers and accommodation in the price, and for riders with their own route in mind it offers tailored logistics: bike hire, accommodation and luggage transfers.
How the grading and the day work
The grading page is the most useful part of the site. Trips run from Introductory (3) to Challenging (7) on the 1-10 scale used by World Expeditions, set by trip length, landscape, gradient, rest days and traveler feedback. Its example descriptions give the daily distances: introductory trips cover 25km to 45km a day on sealed trail surfaces, moderate trips 27 - 58 km (3 - 6 hours) on bike paths and quiet roads with short highway sections, and moderate-to-challenging and challenging trips 37 - 58 km (5 - 7 hours) on mountainous terrain with gradients of 1-3%. For fitness, the site asks for "good health" and a confident rider at the moderate grades, and "excellent health" and "a very confident and capable cyclist" at the top grades, and says that on an electric bike the moderate-to-challenging grade drops to moderate. On a self-guided trip, it notes, "you determine the pace and schedule," and detailed trip notes online cover terrain and fitness preparation.
The about page frames the catalog as local knowledge: "Being locals, we've developed cycling itineraries in the special places of Australia," built around "special interests, budgets and time constraints." It also tells hesitant riders, "You don't have to be a keen cyclist to join one of our Australian cycling trips," while the grading page makes clear which trips need real fitness.
Booking and support
Bookings and advice come through the "Talk to an expert" line on 1300 114 966 or +61 2 8270 8410, 9AM-5PM AEDT, or by email. The team page names the staff, from general manager Philip Wyndham to the brand and marketing managers, and says many of them "have ridden the very routes we recommend." The site offers free consultations, webinars and trip films, gift vouchers, travel insurance and a travel advisory page. A current "PRICE LOCK" promotion invites bookings on 2027 tours "before prices rise on 1 October." Many trips carry a "Special Offer" tag. Private group, charity, school and social group rides are handled through the wider World Expeditions group, which also runs a Regenerative 2030 program and publishes a trip carbon footprint (excluding flights).
What the site does not clarify
The homepage, about, team and grading pages do not set out deposits, payment timing or cancellation and refund terms; those sit in the booking conditions. Group sizes for the guided and supported departures are not stated, and neither are guide qualifications. Inclusions are summarized in one line, so meal inclusions and accommodation standards need checking on each trip page, and the site does not give a single-traveler price rule.
Australian Cycle Tours suits riders who want an Australian rail trail or regional ride with the bags moved, the bike supplied and an honest difficulty grade to pick from, whether that is a gentle 3-day family ride or an 8-day climb to Kosciuszko. Families have dedicated options such as the Family Friendly Northern Rivers Rail Trail, and electric bikes are a listed theme for riders who want help on the hills. Riders who want a guide beside them all the way have fewer choices, since most trips are self-guided.
