A Cruise Company's Booking Hub
City Experiences is the consumer booking site of the Hornblower Group, whose name appears in the site's footer and consent forms ("the Hornblower Group Family of Companies"). The "Our Brands" menu lists the companies it sells under one roof: City Cruises, Alcatraz City Cruises, Niagara City Cruises, Statue City Cruises, Walks, Devour Tours, NYC Ferry and City Ferry. Most of what the site sells is boat-based: harbor sightseeing cruises, dining cruises, whale watching, speed boats and ferries, run by the group's own brands. The site also sells walking and food tours through its Walks and Devour Tours brands, and its cancellation note mentions "partner tours," so not every listing is run by the group itself.
The destination menu is broad. In the United States it lists California (Berkeley, Long Beach, Marina del Rey, Newport Beach, Sacramento, San Diego and San Francisco), Washington DC with Alexandria and National Harbor, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston and other Massachusetts ports, Norfolk, Chicago, New York and New Jersey, and Puerto Rico. In Canada it lists Niagara Falls, Toronto and Gananoque in Ontario. Europe covers London, York and Edinburgh in the UK, Paris, Barcelona, Madrid, San Sebastian and Seville, Italian cities from Bologna to Venice, Dublin and Lisbon, and an Australia section lists Sydney, Melbourne, Darwin, Broome, Perth, Rottnest Island, the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsunday Islands. The "Popular Cities" footer is mostly American, plus Niagara Falls, Gananoque, Toronto, London, Poole and York.
What It Sells
The site's own list of best sellers gives a fair picture of the core: Statue of Liberty General Admission in New York, an Alcatraz Day Tour, the Voyage to the Falls Boat Tour at Niagara Falls, a San Diego Whale & Dolphin Watching Adventure, and a Bottomless Mimosa Architectural Brunch Cruise on the Chicago River. The footer groups the rest by type: cruises in New York, Boston, Chicago, London, San Francisco, San Diego, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Toronto, Washington DC, Newport Beach, Marina del Rey, Sacramento and Long Beach; whale watching in Boston and San Diego; the Codzilla speed boat in Boston and Seadog in Chicago; and dining cruises, with seasonal promotions for Thanksgiving, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and the holidays.
Regional menus add more. Ontario's top experiences include a Fall Fireworks Cruise, Dining Cruises in Toronto Harbour, a Toronto Harbour Tour and 1000 Islands Cruises from Gananoque. The Europe menu points to Colosseum, Vatican, Louvre and Doge's Palace tours and food tours, and to a York Self Drive Boat; Walks and Devour Tours appear in the same brand menu. Australia's list includes a Sydney Harbour Cruise, Darwin Harbour Cruise, Horizontal Falls, Cruise Whitsundays and Melbourne Skydeck.
Promotions change with the calendar. The group events page carried banners for 40% off December to April dining cruises, 30% off fall dining with the code FALL30, 20% off Mother's Day with MOM20, Valentine's Day and Thanksgiving dining cruises, and events tied to the Sail250 tall ships and America's 250th anniversary on the water. A "City Cruises Live" program sells live events on board, which the page calls "THE ULTIMATE FLOATING STAGE." The site introduces the staff simply: "Our local expert crew and guides are excited to show you the cities they love."
Weddings, Groups and Private Events
A large part of the site is about private events on the group's boats, sold under the City Cruises name. The wedding pages describe "award-winning venues for wedding events, with all-inclusive options tailored to your budget and style, including chef-prepared menus, full-bar packages, and customizable entertainment," plus rehearsal dinners, engagement parties, bridal showers and vow renewals. Catering can be passed hors d'oeuvres, stations, a buffet or a plated multi-course meal, and the pages say complimentary event coordinators help with upgrades from a vendor list. After an enquiry, "you'll receive a customized offer from an experienced Account Manager." A seasonal promotion offered 20% off weddings with the code WEDDING20. The yacht wedding page describes open-air ceremonies on deck followed by indoor receptions in climate-controlled lounges, with a live band or a DJ.
Group bookings start at 20 guests. The group page says City Cruises can give "your group of 20 or more a memorable day on the water," from a historic cruise in Boston to whale watching in San Diego or Boston, and that smaller groups should call 1-800-459-8105 or book online. The enquiry form asks for a budget per person in bands from $50-$100 to $200+.
Booking, Payment and Cancellation
Booking runs through the site, which has a Manage Booking page, phone and SMS contact options, a FAQ and a rewards program (some listings are flagged "2X Reward Points"). The site says it offers "Multiple payment options and tools to reschedule, add enhancements, and more," and for orders over $50 it offers Affirm, to "pay over time in four installments."
Cancellation terms vary by listing. The site shows filters for "Free Cancellation Up to 2 hours in advance" and "Up to 24 hours in advance," and it offers a feature called Ticket Assurance: "Reschedule or refund your reservation up to 2 hours prior to boarding time with Ticket Assurance." It adds that Ticket Assurance is "Not available on select experiences including special events, holidays or partner tours." The site is available in English, Spanish, Chinese, German, Italian, Japanese, French, Portuguese, Korean and Dutch.
What It Leaves Open, and Who It Suits
The homepage, wedding and group pages do not show individual cruise prices, durations or meeting points; each tour page carries its own "Where to Meet," "Includes" and cancellation sections, and those are the details to read before paying. These pages do not mark which listings are partner tours rather than Hornblower brands, which matters because Ticket Assurance does not cover them. It also does not show review scores on these pages.
City Experiences suits travelers in the big American harbor cities, Niagara Falls and Toronto who want a sightseeing cruise, a dining cruise or a ferry to the Statue of Liberty or Alcatraz booked in one account, and it suits event planners looking for a boat for a wedding or a corporate group of 20 or more. Travelers after European walking and food tours will find the group's Walks and Devour Tours brands linked from the same menu.
