Operator and location

PacWhale Eco-Adventures runs its own whale watching, snorkeling, sunset and dinner cruises on Maui, Hawaii, on catamarans it owns and crews itself. It is "100% owned by Pacific Whale Foundation", a nonprofit that the Why Choose Us page says was founded in 1980 "to protect a declining humpback whale population", and the homepage calls PacWhale "Maui's only nonprofit-powered ocean operator where every tour directly supports marine research, conservation, education and outreach". The company address is 300 Ma'alaea Rd in Wailuku, and cruises leave from Ma'alaea Harbor and Lāhainā Harbor, with snorkel trips reaching Molokini Crater, Honolua Bay and the coast of Lānaʻi. Prices are in US dollars.

The origin story explains the model. The Why Choose Us page says the foundation's early researchers offered educational whale watches at weekends to share their findings and raise money for research, and "that same tradition continues today", with profits going to the foundation's work. The same page says the company has carried "more than 6 million guests".

Whale watching

The whale page advertises cruises for November 2025 to April 2026, and its FAQ describes the Maui season as November to May with a peak from mid-January to March. The page says PacWhale runs "the most daily departures on Maui". The Classic Whale Watch is 2 hours, morning or afternoon, at $99.05, pitched at first-timers. The Small Group Whale Watch is $129.95 on a smaller vessel. The Sounds of the Ocean Whale Watch Sail, a morning trip starting 12/15/25 at $169.95, adds listening to the whales. The Sunset Dinner and Whale Watch runs 3 hours with a 4-course dinner and 2 cocktails at $189.95, beginning November 15, and the Sunset Cocktail and Whale Watch Sail from Ma'alaea Harbor is 2 hours with appetizers at $149.95. Other options include a Whale Watch Sail at $119.95, a Whale Watch Sail Deluxe of 2.5 hours with lunch aboard the sailing vessel Ocean Spirit, an Exclusive Whale Watch With The Experts of 2.5 hours with breakfast at $159.95, adults-only (21+) whale watches, and a Maui Snorkel and Sunset Whale Watch Sail, an afternoon family trip of 4 hours with 1 meal at $179.95.

The FAQ is informative on its own: it names melon-headed, short-finned pilot, pygmy and false killer whales alongside humpbacks, and says the endangered Main Hawaiian Islands false killer whale population numbers "less than 200". A Live Whale and Dolphin Sightings Map is linked from the page.

Snorkeling tours

The Molokini and Turtle Arches Snorkel runs 5 hours with 2 meals and beverages and visits 2 locations, Molokini Crater and a second spot the site says is "known for its Green sea turtles and underwater lava arches", at $219.95. The Molokini and Turtle Adventure adds a drift snorkel on Molokini's back side and a search for dolphins and rays on a small-group boat, listed at $164.96 with a 25% online discount. The Lānaʻi Snorkel and Dolphin Sail from Lahaina is an interisland trip with 1 cocktail at $199.95, which the page says visits "one of the world's top 10 snorkel locations". The Honolua Snorkel and Dolphin Sail heads up the northwest coast to Honolua Bay, which the page calls "a protected Marine Life Conservation District" and "what we think is the islands most pristine reef".

For snorkelers, the Why Choose Us page says the crew provides equipment and instruction, several free flotation options and a short "Snorkel 101" class, and that full face snorkel masks "are not allowed on our trips for safety reasons".

Sunset cruises

The sunset menu splits into whale watch sunset cruises (November to March) and classic sunset cruises (April to October). The Sunset Dinner Cruise is billed as "Maui's #1 Rated Dinner & Sunset Cruise by Hawaii Magazine's Readers Choice Awards", with a guaranteed private table and a chef-prepared four-course dinner served table-side, 2 cocktails, listed at $111.97 after an extra 30% online discount. The Sunset Sail serves locally sourced appetizers, cocktails with spirits from Ocean Organic Farm and Distillery and beer from Maui Brewing Company along the West Maui coast. The Sunset and Celestial Cruise teaches Polynesian navigation at sunset, then hands over to astronomy writer and speaker Harriet Witt for the stars, listed at $109.95 after an extra 20% online discount.

Crew, safety and boats

The Why Choose Us page is detailed here. It says every trip is led by Certified Marine Naturalists, "all of whom hold graduate or undergraduate degrees in marine biology or related sciences", and that they run a Jr. Naturalist Program for children. It says there are up to seven crew per trip, all certified in First Aid, oxygen administration and CPR, that crew on snorkel trips are lifeguard certified, and that each vessel carries oxygen, back and neck supports and AEDs. The catamarans use what the page calls SmoothCat technology, and Ocean Guardian and Ocean Odyssey run on 100% Pacific Biodiesel. The company says it developed Whale Protection Devices to guide whales away from propellers. The footer adds that food waste is composted, dishware is reusable, and drinks aboard are sourced in Hawaiʻi.

Booking and terms

Tours book online (a banner says "Book online & save") or by phone on +1 808-249-8811. Promotions change often: a "Buy One Get One Free" offer on select cruises through 10/31, seasonal snorkel savings of 25% and extra online discounts appear across the site. The footer explains that 2026 prices reflect higher costs for fuel, marine insurance, maintenance and staffing. Private charters, gift cards and holiday cruises are also offered.

What the site leaves open, and who it suits

The tour cards do not show cancellation or refund terms (the footer links Terms and Conditions), and they rarely give departure times beyond morning, afternoon or evening. Several cards, including the Honolua and Sunset Sail trips, show no price or duration, and private charter prices are not listed. Age limits are given only for the 21+ whale watches.

PacWhale suits travelers who want whales, reefs or a sunset with a naturalist crew and a conservation purpose behind the ticket, and families who like the Jr. Naturalist extras. With frequent discounts, the price paid depends a good deal on when and how a trip is booked.
