A London operator with its own buses

Golden Tours is a London sightseeing company. Its About page says it was founded in 1984, calls it "Londons führendes Sightseeing-Unternehmen" (London's leading sightseeing company), and describes its range as day trips, "unseren eigenen Hop-on-Hop-off-Busservice" (its own hop-on hop-off bus service), attraction tickets, theatre tickets, walking tours and airport transfers. So it is both an operator, running its own buses and tours, and a seller of other venues' tickets. The About page describes a partnership with the Gray Line Association and uses the name "Golden Tours/Gray Line London"; the homepage adds "Proud member of Gray Line" and "Award Winning & Family Run". The company says it has carried more than 10 million guests from hundreds of countries.

It is based in London and most of what it sells starts there. The homepage's top destinations are Stonehenge, London, Bath, Windsor, Edinburgh, the Cotswolds, Liverpool and Paris, and its "Out of London" menu lists hop-on hop-off buses in York, Newcastle & Gateshead, Edinburgh, Windsor and Bath. Prices are shown in pounds (£ GBP) by default, with a currency switcher. The site runs in English, Spanish, Italian, French, German, Chinese and Portuguese, and lists phone numbers for the UK, +44 (0)207 630 2028, and the US, +1 800 509 2507.

Buses and London tours

The hop-on hop-off bus is the core product. The homepage lists a Hop-on Hop-off London Bus Tour 1 Day Ticket from £24.78 (was £42.00), and the special-offers page lists a 24-hour ticket from £33.32 (was £49.00) that includes 2 free walking tours, a free Thames cruise and audio guides in 12 languages plus children's commentary. Combination tickets add the London Eye, the Tower of London or both, and the Golden Pass, "London's All-In-One Sightseeing Ticket", is listed from £58.65 (was £69.00). The menu also highlights the "World's First Electric Routemaster".

Guided options sit alongside. An Open-Top Bus Tour of London with Live Guide lasts about 2 hours, with an English-speaking guide, from £28.00 (was £35.00). Other London products on the homepage include the Afternoon Tea Bus with Panoramic Tour of London (about 90 minutes, from £45.32), the Westminster Walking Tour with Churchill War Rooms (about 75-90 minutes, from £39.00), a Christmas Lights London by Night Tour with Live Guide (about 75-90 minutes, from £25.00) and The Smurfs London Tea Party Adventure (about 65-70 minutes, from £36.90). Day trips and Harry Potter

Day trips from London include Windsor, Bath and Stonehenge; Simply Stonehenge; Stonehenge and Bath; Windsor, Oxford and Stonehenge; Brighton and Seven Sisters; Oxford, Stratford, Cotswolds and Warwick Castle; Leeds Castle, Canterbury & Greenwich; and Simply Paris, an escorted day trip. The Windsor Castle, Stonehenge and Bath Day Trip is listed at about 11 hours from £67.15 (was £79.00).

The best-known product is the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London package. Golden Tours says it is a preferred partner of the studio tour, which it says lets it offer packages with return transport even when no tickets are available on the official website. The package costs from £95.50 (was £135.00), lasts about 7 hours including transport, and includes a double-decker coach to the studio with films on seat-back screens and studio entry with an extended 4-hour visit. Food, hotel pick-up and the digital guide (£5.25 to rent at the studio) are not included.

The page describes the studio visit itself, with the Great Hall set, original props, animatronics and special effects, the Gringotts Bank set, and real costumes and props from all 8 Harry Potter films. The times shown in the booking window, it explains, are the departure times of the branded bus from the chosen London stop.

On the day

The studio tour page is specific. Coaches leave from Bus Stop 1, Bulleid Way, Victoria (London SW1W 9SR), from 144 Marylebone Rd near Baker Street station, and from Pancras Road near King's Cross. The page stresses that the branded bus does NOT leave from Victoria Coach Station, gives walking directions from Victoria Station, and says guests must return on their assigned bus and show their e-ticket. Branded buses are subject to availability, with USB ports and Wi-Fi. The page adds that wheelchair users should not book the King's Cross departure.

On children, the studio tour is free for under-4s, but a transport fee applies for children aged 3 and 4 because they need a seat; children under 2 need a ticket but ride free. The page also warns that Butterbeer may contain nuts and other allergens.

Booking and terms

Tours are booked online, with a cart, customer account and an app. The Warner Bros. page states the cancellation terms: cancel up to 48 hours before departure for a full refund, while groups of 10 or more must cancel 30 days ahead to be refunded. The homepage advertises "Free cancellations available", a "Best Price Guarantee", and "Over 17,000 5* TripAdvisor reviews". Groups, travel agents and FAQs have their own links in the menu.

What the site leaves open

The 48-hour cancellation rule is spelled out for the studio tour package, but the homepage says only that free cancellation is "available", so the terms for other products have to be checked on each tour page. Most listings show a "was" price without saying what it refers to. The site does not give group sizes for the day trips, and apart from the note on King's Cross, the site does not describe wheelchair access on its buses.

Who it suits

Golden Tours suits visitors who want to book London's main sightseeing pieces with one operator: a hop-on hop-off pass with walking tours and a river cruise thrown in, a Stonehenge or Windsor day trip, and a Warner Bros. Studio Tour seat with transport. The detailed departure instructions and clear 48-hour rule on the studio tour page are a plus.

It suits less well a traveler who wants a small-group day out, since the site does not state group sizes, or a wheelchair user who needs confirmed step-free access before booking.
