Virgin Balloon Flights runs passenger hot air balloon flights across the United Kingdom in its own big red balloons. The footer names the business as AirXcite Ltd T/A Virgin Balloon Flights. The locations page calls it "the UK's only nationwide passenger flight operator" and says it launches "from more than 100 launch sites across the UK," reaching "from Angus in Scotland to Launceston in Cornwall and Abergavenny in Wales to Norwich in the east." Its region list covers the North East, North West, Yorkshire and The Humber, the East and West Midlands, the East of England, London, the South East, the South West, Scotland and Wales. The site says the balloons fly "from spring to autumn."

The same page says the company has been flying passengers "since 1994, with more than a million passengers" so far, and describes it as "the UK's No.1 passenger balloon rides provider." Those are its own claims. The homepage features launch sites near Bath, Bristol, Guildford, Henley-on-Thames, Oxford and Swindon, and there is a postcode and town search for the rest.

How the product works: buy a voucher, then book

The model here is different from a balloon company where you pick a date and pay for a seat. The homepage sets it out as three steps: "1. Buy. Flexible vouchers, for you or as a gift for someone awesome. 2. Book. Choose where and when, with help from our friendly team. 3. Fly." The voucher comes first, and the flight date and launch site are chosen afterwards.

The voucher features listed on the homepage are "Instant Digital Delivery," "12 Month Validity," "Gift and Book Later" and an "Exclusive Exchange Program." There is a birthday gift line, and the homepage also mentions "hot air balloon rides for two." The basket shows prices in pounds sterling and has a line for flight photos as an add-on, but the site does not print voucher prices, so the cost is only visible once you choose a voucher type.

New flight dates, according to the locations page, are "released for booking every single week during the flying season." The site advises "exploring a few locations within your region when purchasing your vouchers," since "you're not limited to booking the nearest one."

The flight itself

The homepage runs through the day: arrive and get briefed by your pilot, help set up the balloon, "take to the skies for around an hour," land, toast with "prosecco or soft drink," pack up the balloon, and "grab your certificate endorsed by Sir Richard." It also notes that this is "the only birthday gift that comes with a fire safety briefing." The homepage mentions "peaceful sunrise flights over rolling countryside," and the Bath page refers to "AM flights."

Each launch site has its own page with an address, directions and a flight status line. Three examples show how detailed these are.

Bath (Somerset). The launch site is Royal Victoria Park, Marlborough Ln, Bath, BA1 2LZ. You meet the crew "in the top north east corner of Royal Victoria Park," not in front of the Royal Crescent. For AM flights the page warns of parking restrictions in the park and points drivers to the Charlotte Street Pay & Display car park (BA1 2NE), with walking directions past the needle obelisk. The status line is 01225 435505. The back-up site is Bath Newbridge. The page says views may include the Somerset countryside and possibly Stonehenge and Salisbury Plain.

Guildford (Surrey). The launch site is Shalford Park Sports Pavilion, Shalford Road, GU4 8AA, on the A281 south of the town, and "parking is available." The status line is 01524 230808. Back-up sites are Alton (Hampshire), Fernhurst (West Sussex), West Sussex (Petworth) and Dunsfold. The page says that on a clear day with the right wind you "could even see as far away as the Wiltshire border and the very southern fringes of Greater London."

Oxford (Oxfordshire). The launch site is Oxford Ice Rink, Oxpens Road, OX1 1RX, and you meet the pilot and crew in the ice rink car park. The status line is 01491 524215. Back-up sites are Henley-On-Thames, Newbury (Berkshire) and Chiltern Park Airfield.

Launch site pages carry a note that the flight radius shown is "for illustrative purposes only" and that balloons cannot fly over restricted air space, so no route is promised.

Weather, back-up sites and support

Weather is the central fact of British ballooning, and the site addresses it in two places. The homepage's third step reads: "Weather not playing ball? We'll extend your vouchers for free." The locations page explains back-up launch sites: "almost all" launch locations have them, mainly used "when conditions are not flyable at the original site," and also when the main site is unavailable for other reasons. The site says they will be within 20 miles of the original site "where possible" but "can sometimes be further away," and a list of back-up sites for your main location comes with your booking confirmation. Before any flight, you call the passenger flight information line for that site to confirm it is going ahead.

Support is by phone and email. The sales line is 01952 212769, the email is customerservice@virginballoonflights.co.uk, and the listed opening hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Voucher holders can sign in to manage a voucher online. What the site leaves open, and who it suits

The main gap is price: the site prints no voucher price. The site does not say how many passengers share a basket or whether private flights exist beyond the "rides for two" wording. It does not state age, height or weight limits, or any accessibility arrangements. The voucher extension for weather is stated, but the site does not say how many times it can be extended, or what refund applies if you simply change your mind. The Exchange Program is named but not explained.

What it does well is reach and logistics. It has more than 100 launch sites spread from Scotland to Cornwall, and each site page gives an exact address, parking advice and a direct status line. It suits people buying a balloon flight as a gift, and UK residents or long-stay visitors who can be flexible on dates through the spring-to-autumn season. A short-stay visitor who needs a flight on one particular morning should weigh the voucher-first, weather-dependent model before buying.
