A Century-Old Guided Tour Operator

Collette designs and runs its own guided tours, and its homepage advertises "170+ Guided Tours to All 7 Continents": Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America. The destination menu goes down to country level, from Albania, Croatia, Iceland and Montenegro in Europe to Botswana, Egypt, Namibia and Tanzania in Africa, Japan, Nepal and Vietnam in Asia, and Argentina, Ecuador and Peru in South America. The company's About page says "Since 1918, we have been sharing our love of travel," and the team page places its headquarters in Rhode Island, USA, with operations in Canada and Australia. The US site shows tour prices per person in US dollars. The footer names the business as Collette Travel Services and lists "CST No. 2006766-20; UBI No. 601-220-855; Fla. Seller of Travel Reg. No. ST35613."

The company's line is "By Travelers. For Travelers.", which the team page explains as "every experience is expertly planned and expertly led by destination experts; travelers get the cultural WOWs as much as the must-sees." The homepage adds "With more than 100 years of guided travel expertise, we handle every detail so you can enjoy the journey." The team page describes the current chief executive, Jaclyn Leibl-Cote, as "only the fourth CEO to head the 107-year-old company and its first female CEO."

Ways to Travel and the Tour Range

The About page describes a collection that "features comprehensive land tours, river cruises, rail journeys, small group tours, family trips, garden holidays and more." The Ways to Travel menu groups the trips as Classic, Small Group Explorations, Spotlights, Cruising, Faith, Private, Solo Traveler, Multigenerational Travel and Back to Back Tours. The homepage and company pages do not explain each style beyond its name, apart from Small Group Explorations, which the homepage sums up as "50+ journeys worldwide, guided by experts and 100+ years of experience." A New Tours section invites travelers to "Discover 20+ new tours across five continents."

The menus name a spread of current itineraries: Gems of Greece: Athens, Naxos & Crete; Essential South America featuring Chile, the Mendoza Wine Region & Buenos Aires; Charms of Québec, a journey through Montreal, Charlevoix and Quebec City; Montana: Exploring Big Sky Country featuring Yellowstone & Glacier National Parks; America's Music Cities featuring New Orleans, Memphis & Nashville; Exploring New Zealand's Wonders featuring the North & South Islands; Costa Rica: A World of Nature; Patagonia: Edge of the World, with a 4-night Patagonia cruise; Kingdoms of Southeast Asia, covering Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand; Wonders of Thailand; and Peru: Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca. Each card carries a "From" price per person in US dollars beside a higher regular price and a "Save up to" amount. The Travel Planning menu adds themed inspiration pages, from African safaris and national parks to NYC Featuring Hamilton, and an Eat Drink Travel section on cooking classes and regional cuisine.

How the Tours Are Run

The homepage puts the operating model in 3 short claims. Under "Led by Experts, Evolved by Travelers" it says "Our local teams are part of the communities you'll explore and know every detail" and "Traveler feedback shapes how we make the experience even better." Under "Unmatched Tour Design" it says "Our regionally based teams design our tours for the modern traveler," and under "Meet Our Local Tour Guides" it says "We know where and when to go, who to meet, and what not to miss."

The team page shows how that is organized. The executive vice president for tour development and delivery "oversees global teams responsible for tour design, contracting, operations, and delivery" and runs Traveler Relations, described as "a dedicated channel for travelers to share their experiences and provide feedback." The senior vice president for North American sales "began his career as a tour manager." The company's stated values are "Be Happy, Be Responsible, Be Trailblazers and Be the Legacy," and its charity arm, the Collette Foundation, is described as a nonprofit working "toward zero hunger, quality education, reducing inequality, and environmental sustainability."

The reviews on the homepage are the company's selection. It reports "4.8 out of 5 the past year," backed by 30,769 lifetime reviews. Melanie K. writes of the Treasures of South Africa tour that "Our tour guide, Johnathan, was knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and our fellow travelers were lovely." A traveler on Portugal and Its Islands says "All the optional activities were chosen with care for a variety of levels and interests," one on Reflections of Italy says "There was plenty of free time balanced with tour time," and a Canadian Rockies reviewer advises "Make sure you sign up for the tour with the train ride."

Booking, Deals and Support

Collette sells direct and through agents. The header shows "800.340.5158" with "or call your travel advisor," there is a "Request a Call Back" form, and a Find An Agent tool says "your local travel agent can assist you in making reservations." The footer also offers "Become a Group Leader" and lists AARP under partnerships. The current offer reads "Save Up to $1,500* Per Couple on Tours Worldwide," with the line "The more you personalize your tour, the more you save with these stackable savings," the offer code HELLO2027 and the note "*Restrictions Apply."

Under "Industry-Leading Service" the homepage says "From the moment you book, we're here," naming "a worry-free Travel Protection Plan, Private Chauffer Service to and from the airport, and 24/7 Emergency Support." The Travel Planning menu links to Travel Protection, Sedan Service, Travel Alerts, Virtual Events, the Collette Passport Club and a page on the benefits of low season, and the Helpful Links point to a mobile app and FAQs.

What the Site Leaves Open

The homepage and company pages do not state deposit amounts, payment schedules, or cancellation and refund terms; those sit behind the Terms and Conditions link in the footer. They do not say whether the chauffeur service and the Travel Protection Plan come with every booking or cost extra, and they do not spell out the restrictions on the $1,500 offer. Group sizes for Small Group Explorations are not given on the homepage or company pages, nor are single supplements for solo travelers, and the footer's Accessibility link is the only reference to accessibility.

Collette suits travelers who want a planned, guided trip from a long-established operator, with the choice of a small group, a private tour, a faith-based trip or a multigenerational holiday, and who like having a phone line, an agent and a 24/7 emergency number behind them. Anyone comparing prices closely should read the terms and the offer restrictions before relying on the "Save up to" figures.
