Local Tuk Tuk: Electric City Tours in Portugal and Spain

Local Tuk Tuk runs its own guided tours in electric tuk-tuks. The site's city menu lists Lisbon, Sintra and Faro in Portugal and Madrid and A Coruña in Spain, and the destinations section tags each one: Lisbon as the "City of the Seven Hills," Sintra as "The Peculiar and Mysterious Village," Faro as "Algarve's Capital," Madrid as "The City of the Many Plazas" and A Coruña as "The Crystal City." Prices are shown in euros, and the site is available in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Its tagline is "Come as a tourist, leave as a local."

The About page explains the vehicle. The tuk tuk "came from far far away, from the big cities in India or Thailand, where they were invented more than 50 years ago," and is now "part of the touristic menu of several European cities, such as Madrid and Lisbon." It calls the tuk-tuk an "unconventional means of transportation" suited to "the narrower and steeper streets, the more hidden viewpoints and all the places only the real natives know." The company's stated mission is "to provide you with unique experiences and to show you the essence of each city in a genuine and passionate way."

Tours by City

Each city page lists its tours with a price, a group size and a length.

Sintra. The site lists From Sintra to Cascais ("Mesmerizing endless blue ocean views," 4 hours, € 420.00), Sintra Essential (1 hour, € 115.00), Sintra Total ("Explore Sintra's every corner," 3 hours, € 340.00), Palaces Route (2 hours, € 200.00), Cabo da Roca ("The westernmost point in continental Europe," 2 hours, € 200.00) and Sintra Beaches (2h30, € 260.00), all for "Up to 6 People." The page introduces Sintra as a world heritage site that "served as an inspiration for many authors as they wrote their famed novels and poems." Its guide section covers Pena Palace, "this romantic monument with a colourful exterior and Moorish details," with "85 hectares of lush green trees, small lakes and viewpoints," and advises "take at least a few hours to roam the gardens." The page highlights Carmo Church and its Bone Chapel ("a strange sensation walking into a building made entirely out of bones"), Faro Beach, which it notes is "Accessible only by boat or bridge," and "the calming shores of Ria Formosa Natural Park."

A Coruña. The page features the Tower of Hercules, "Built in the 2nd century by the Romans" and "the oldest lighthouse still in use," María Pita Square, named after a woman who helped defend the city "during Francis Drake's 16th-century invasion," and the "Rioza and Orzán beaches."

Lisbon. The homepage lists Lisbon Old City (1 hour, € 80.00) and Lisbon Hills (2 hours, € 160.00), both "Up to 6 People." As its "City of the Month" it features the Portas do Sol viewpoint, with its "jaw-dropping view overlooking the Tagus River" and the alleys of Alfama, and a "bustling vibe, to which the street artists contribute with free live shows." A second homepage review, from Sikander, headed "Lisbon Big Overview," says that after the tour "I have been able to access the most amazing hidden places of the city." A review on the homepage from Jean Michel, headed "Lisbon Street Art," thanks a guide named Eduardo: "We have seen beautiful graphitis that we would never seen without his help."

Madrid appears in the city menu and in the destinations list as "The City of the Many Plazas," and the About page invites visitors to "Come explore Lisbon and Madrid in an electric and environmentally friendly tuk tuk."

How Tours Work

The About page says "Our tours are led by young and specialized drivers in each of the cities they work," whose "mission" is "to offer you genuine and detailed information of all the places you pass by." The vehicles are electric; a site banner headed "Ecofriendly Tours" says "Have fun in our Electric Vehicles." On weather, the About page says "Local tuk tuk cars have a removable roof adapted to the weather conditions. Rainy days, or radiant sunshine days, are always perfect for a tuk tuk tour." It also says "Each one of our tours are thought to the detail, always focused on the different needs of every client."

Group sizes are set per tour: up to 6 people in Sintra and Lisbon, up to 4 in Faro and A Coruña.

Booking and Terms

Tours are booked online through the site, which has a search by city and duration. A banner headed "Secure Payments" promises "Safe online booking and payment," and one headed "Money Back Guarantee" says "Not satisfied? Get your money back." The tour pages do not state a cancellation window or refund terms beyond the one-line money-back promise, so the General Conditions page is the place to check, and it does not explain what "not satisfied" covers. It does not name meeting points or say whether hotel pickup is offered. It does not list the languages the drivers guide in, even though the site itself runs in English, Spanish and Portuguese. It does not say whether a listed price is per person or per vehicle. Children's ages and accessibility are not addressed.

The format suits couples, families and small groups who want to see a lot of Sintra's palaces, Lisbon's hills or Faro's old town in an hour or two without walking every slope. Travelers who want Cabo da Roca or the coast to Cascais in one outing have the longer Sintra options. Anyone who needs firm cancellation terms should ask before paying.
