Jack Harter Helicopters is a Kauai, Hawaii, helicopter company that flies its own tours and charters around the island. Its contact block gives the address as 4231 Ahukini Rd, Lihue, HI 96766. The homepage headline reads "Kauai Helicopter Tours Dedicated to Safety and Quality Since 1962", and the tour pages call the company the "ORIGINATORS of helicopter tours on Kauai" with "60+ Years of Experience". The homepage describes it as "a local family owned and operated small business, with three generations all working together", and shows a photo of Frank Sinatra with Jack Harter after a tour.

The company claims it "has been voted Best Helicopter Tour of Kauai, year after year", without naming who voted, and says it is "As Recommended by The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook". The About menu links to pages on its history, pilots, safety, volunteer work, and donations to the Kauai Forest Bird Recovery Project.

The tours

The flagship, marked "MOST POPULAR", is the Kauai Doors-Off Helicopter Tour in an MD500E. It costs $460 per passenger, "$50 Fuel Surcharge Included", runs 60-65 minutes, takes up to 4 passengers, and is open to ages 10 and up. The aircraft has "the doors removed and pilot controls on the left-hand side", and "Each passenger is securely harnessed in". The route runs clockwise, and the page lists what guests may see: Nawiliwili Harbor and the Menehune Fishpond, Kipu Kai and the Tunnel of Trees, Manawaiopuna Falls in Hanapepe Valley, Olokele Canyon, Waimea Canyon, Waipoo Falls, the Na Pali sea cliffs and valleys (Nualolo, Kalalau, Hanakoa and an open-ceiling cave), the North Shore beaches from Kee to Hanalei, Hanalei Bay, Mt. Waialeale and Wailua Falls. The page adds that it "cannot guarantee all highlights as flight paths are weather-dependent".

The Kauai Doors-On Helicopter Tour flies in a "six-passenger AStar" for $440, and is open to all ages. The site notes that the "AStar will be undergoing scheduled upgrades now through November 2026".

The Doors-Off Heart of the Island Kauai Tour is $221, "$30 Fuel Surcharge Included", for ages 10 and up. The page calls it "This shorter Waialeale tour", flying into the heart of the island to explore "the remnants of the ancient volcano of Waialeale", which it says is "over eight million years old". The homepage says the pilot points out filming locations from Blue Hawaii, Fantasy Island, Tropic Thunder and Jurassic Park. The site does not give this tour's flight time.

The company makes a point of length. Its FAQ argues that "60 minutes should be the minimum flight time for a full-island helicopter tour of Kauai", compared with tours "flown for only 45-50 minutes", and says it takes "a minimum of 1 minute to make a full turn" so both sides of the cabin get the view.

Charters cover private tours, "flower showers, aerial photography/videography, external load transportation, location scouting, off-airport transportation". The site says it is "the only operator on Kauai offering charter services in two different aircraft", and names NASA, National Geographic and the State of Hawaii as repeat charter clients.

Rules for the day

The rules are detailed. The weight limit is 250 lbs for an individual and 400 lbs for a pair, including clothing, shoes and carry-on items, and anyone over it must buy an adjacent "comfort seat". For parties of 3-4 in the MD500E, one passenger must be 150 lbs or less and no taller than 5'10" to take the front middle seat. Every passenger is weighed at check-in. The doors-off FAQ says check-in is 45 minutes before the flight, while the Heart of the Island page says 30 minutes.

Children under 18 must be with an adult, and for doors-off tours a child "must be at least 10 years of age"; the site suggests asking a hotel about babysitting for younger children. Doors-off guests must wear shoes that are "laced or strapped on", and a light, preferably waterproof jacket is recommended. Hats, beanies, GoPro head mounts, scarves, turbans and other headgear are banned on all tours because they "pose a risk to everyone's safety when boarding, flying, and deboarding". Guests may bring a phone or camera on a wrist or neck strap, sunglasses and a jacket, but not iPads, bags, loose items, flip flops, or selfie or GoPro sticks longer than 12 inches.

Seat requests can be made at booking but "we cannot guarantee any seat requests", because seating is set for weight and balance. The tour pages say "we always fly a full tour with all seats sold", so guests on a regular tour fly with other passengers. The site states the tours are "Not wheelchair accessible- Mobility required".

Booking, weather and cancellation

The cancellation policy allows guests to cancel or change "with no obligations by notifying us at least 48 hours before your tour is scheduled to depart". No-shows and changes inside 48 hours "are subject to full charges". On weather, the company says it will only fly when conditions allow a safe flight, and will not fly when "the weather is such that it is not worth your time and money". Several reviews on the homepage mention rescheduling for weather and advise booking early in a stay.

What the site leaves open, and who it suits

The site does not say how long the Heart of the Island flight lasts, what happens to a booking cancelled by weather (refund or rebooking), or what a private charter costs. The FareHarbor fee is not quantified, and the two check-in times need confirming.

Jack Harter suits Kauai visitors who want a full hour or more over the island, especially doors-off with a camera strapped to the wrist, and who are happy to share the cabin. Families with young children can use the doors-on AStar once its upgrades finish, and budget-minded travelers have the shorter Waialeale flight.
