A Montana trip-planning company working with operators worldwide
Adventure Life is a travel company based in Missoula, Montana, that plans and books small group tours, expedition and river cruises, and tailor-made private trips around the world. It is a planner and seller more than an operator: its "Why Travel With Us" section says "We're not tied to any one operator, so you get honest, personalized recommendations", its Reasons page describes the team as "match-makers" working with "trusted partners all over the world", and the menu links to an Operating Partners page. Guest reviews on the site name the operators behind some trips, such as an UnCruise small-ship voyage in Glacier Bay with "arrangements made through Adventure Life". Its destination menu covers Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Central America and Mexico, Europe, North America, the polar regions, South America and the South Pacific, from the Galapagos and Patagonia to Antarctica, the Danube and Rhine, Tanzania, Vietnam and Alaska. Prices on the site are in US dollars. The footer names the company as ALJ Inc.
The homepage calls it "Leaders in private journeys, small group tours and expedition voyages worldwide".
History and range
The About page gives a year-by-year history. Founder Brian Morgan started in 1999 with three guided trips to Peru and Ecuador, sold from a paper pamphlet, and added the Galapagos that year. Bolivia, Costa Rica and Belize group tours followed in 2001, and Antarctica and expedition cruises by 2006. In 2010 the company "takes a major shift away from guided group tours and toward tailor-made, customizable tours". In 2018 it built its own quoting platform that combines packages, rates and currencies from different suppliers into one itinerary. It sent 6,503 travelers on trips in 2019 and 6,833 in 2023. Monika Sundem became CEO in 2021 after 13 years at the company. Recent years added land trips in Malawi, Mozambique, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Nepal, Turkey and Jordan (2023), New Zealand, Tahiti, Greenland, Egypt and Kenya (2024), and Antarctica land-based programs, with Japan, Morocco and Albania among the 2025 launches.
Trips are sorted by experience: river cruises, small ship cruises, luxury, land tours, fly cruises, active trips, food and wine, cultural, family, honeymoon and solo travel, plus beaches, trekking, wildlife and safari, private yacht charters, barge cruising and scheduled group tours. The homepage highlights the Galapagos for wildlife and snorkeling, Peru for the Inca Trail and Amazon stays, Antarctica for whale watching and penguin colonies, and Alaska for wilderness lodges, Denali and the Inside Passage.
How planning works
The site lays out four steps: connect with a planner at no cost and no commitment, plan by matching an existing itinerary or building a new one, book, and travel. A "Plan My Trip" form asks for preferences so the company can "connect you with the best Trip Planner". The About page says the team has over 111 years of combined travel experience on more than 650 trips, and the team page introduces planners by region, including some named Travel + Leisure A-List advisors and Condé Nast Top Travel Specialists; the history notes six Condé Nast Top Specialists on staff by 2026. The Reasons page says the company connects travelers with local guides, carries out personal site visits, and runs a 24/7 emergency phone line during trips.
The traveler reviews page shows what the custom work looks like in practice. Recent trips reviewed include a custom Brazil itinerary covering Rio de Janeiro and Iguazu Falls, a custom Panama trip, a combined Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Rapa Nui itinerary, a Tanzania safari, an Amazon and Galapagos trip in Ecuador, a Deep South Basecamp Experience in Antarctica, and an expedition voyage to the Falklands, South Georgia and Elephant Island. Several reviewers name the planner who handled their booking, and one says they have used the company for over 20 years. These are reviews the company chose to show.
The Reasons page describes a travel philosophy of leaving free time in itineraries for chance encounters with locals and wildlife, and credits its dependability to 25 years of operating trips, consistent research and personal site visits by staff. Since 2020, the history adds, the company has worked fully remotely and hires trip planners from around the world, which the team page reflects with planners based in places such as Argentina and the Philippines.
Booking, rewards and support
Travelers reach a planner by phone on 800.344.6118 or 406.541.2677, by live chat, WhatsApp or the online form. The team page lists office hours of Monday to Friday 4:00am to 10:00pm and weekends 9:00am to 5:00pm, Mountain Time. The company says "You don't pay more by booking through us", and past travelers get a 5% Past Traveler Reward on future trips, which the site says applies across a variety of operators and brands. An account keeps favorite trips. The team page shows a Trustpilot TrustScore of 4.9 from 1050 reviews, with recent reviews praising the planners' responsiveness.
On responsible travel, the history says the company was a founding member of the Rainforest Alliance's Tour Operators Sustainability Projects in 2005, donated over $240,000 toward Galapagos conservation through IGTOA, and joined the Adventure Travel Conservation Fund in 2023.
What the pages leave open, and who it suits
The overview pages do not give deposit amounts, payment schedules or cancellation terms, and since trips are run by different partner operators, the booking conditions for a specific trip are the place to confirm them. Group sizes also depend on the partner and trip, and no general cap appears. The site gives no sample prices on these pages, so cost is part of the conversation with a planner.
Adventure Life suits travelers who want an experienced planner to compare expedition cruises, small group tours and custom land trips across many operators, especially for places like the Galapagos, Antarctica, Patagonia or Alaska, and who value one point of contact and an emergency line. Its long history and alumni discount reward repeat trips. Those who want to book directly with a single tour operator, or prefer instant online booking without a planning conversation, may find the model slower, but for help choosing among many options it is a well-established matchmaker.
