What China Highlights is and where it operates

China Highlights sells customized private tours of China, planned by a personal travel advisor and delivered on the ground by what the About page calls "our company-managed local services across China". It belongs to the Highlights Travel family (the footer names Highlights Travel Co., Ltd.), and the homepage dates its work to 1998. The destination menu covers Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Chaozhou-Shantou, Guilin, Guizhou, Guangzhou, Harbin, Hong Kong, Hangzhou, Huangshan, Inner Mongolia, Jiuzhaigou, Pingyao, Suzhou, the Silk Road, Shanghai, Tibet, Taiwan, Xinjiang, Xiamen, Xi'an, Yunnan, the Yangtze River and Zhangjiajie. It also sells combined trips with Japan, Vietnam, Nepal and India, and Thailand, and links to more Asia tours.

The company's own figures on the About page are "20,000+ 5-star reviews", "96% customer satisfaction", "80,000+ customers annually" and "25+ years' experience", and it says it was named China's Leading Tour Operator by the World Travel Awards. The site is available in English plus German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian and Japanese.

The range of trips

The homepage presents sample routes as a starting point for a custom trip rather than fixed departures: the 12-Day China Classic Tour (Beijing, Xi'an, Guilin and Shanghai), the 14-Day China Natural Wonders Discovery (adding Zhangjiajie), an 18-Day New China Discovery through Shanghai, Hangzhou, Beijing, Tianjin, Chengdu, Chongqing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, and a 21-Day China Tour with Silk Road that reaches Dunhuang, Turpan, Urumqi and Kashgar. The menu adds the 2-Week China Essence and Panda Tour, the 3-Week Grand Tour of China's Landmarks and a 3-week tour including Tibet.

Trips can be browsed by length (5-day, 8-day, 10-day, 2-week, 3-week and 4-week), by month, by who is traveling (family or couple) and by theme: Educational Tours, Foodie Journeys, Hiking Adventures, Nature Escapes, Panda Encounters and a Wellness Retreat. There is also a China Visa-Free Tours listing and a train ticket booking service. Seasonal picks tie trips to particular windows: Inner Mongolia's grasslands (June to early October), the "romantic purple" of the Ili River Valley (May to August), the Miao Sisters' Meal Festival (May) and Beijing's "golden vibe" (late October to early November). A "Closer Moment Program" collects local experiences such as a home-cooked meal or a craft lesson, and the site says these are chosen "to give you more time with a place".

The site also carries a good deal of free planning material for a first visit, with guides such as Best Time to Visit China, How to Plan a First Trip to China, How to Plan Your Family Trip to China, 2 Weeks in China, 3 Weeks in China and How to Visit China Without a Visa, plus travelers' stories and destination pages for Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Zhangjiajie, Chengdu, Guilin, Chongqing and Yunnan. The About page frames the aim of each trip in three words, "authentic", "immersive" and "insightful", and says trips are meant to help travelers "understand New China" rather than only see its old buildings. The homepage makes a similar point, saying some of the strongest memories come from "a quieter stretch of the Great Wall" or "a meal made in someone's home" rather than from the landmarks alone.

How it works on the ground

The homepage describes a "4-on-1 Team" for each trip: a personal travel designer, a local guide, a private driver and car, and 24/7 travel support. On guides, the About page says "only 20% of local guides can pass our selection", that guides get "systematic training at least twice a year", and that "80%+ of our 5-star rating reviews are about our guide service". On transport it says "we say 'No' to 30-seat touristy coaches" and promises small cars or vans with air-conditioning and "20% more space", driven by non-smoking drivers who help with luggage. Guides are described as "cultural storytellers" who break language barriers and are on call for emergencies.

Because the trips are private, there is no shared-group size to report: the vehicle and guide are for the traveler's own party. Planning happens with a named advisor. The team page lists dozens of advisors by name, and individual profiles give detail: Roger Li says he has "over 10 years of expertise" and has "assisted more than 5000 clients worldwide", specializing in Beijing, Xi'an, Chengdu, Guilin and Shanghai as well as Tibet, the Silk Road and Yunnan; Leeky Li focuses on Beijing and Shanghai. The About page says advisors give "real-time answers via WhatsApp" and that "we personalize your journey, focusing on your passions, needs, and schedule".

Booking and support

Booking starts with a request to connect with a personal advisor rather than an instant checkout, and the advisor builds the itinerary. The site runs a loyalty program with its own Customer Loyalty Team, a partner program for travel agents, and a newsletter with special offers. The homepage promises "Any Problem, Anytime, Anywhere" support during the trip. The About page adds that the team handles "seamless coordination" of trip details and aims to solve unexpected problems "before they become stress points". Behind the advisors, the team page names Karen Yang as Chief Manager of the Highlights Travel family, alongside separate customer loyalty, partner care and content teams. The footer links to the company's Terms, but the site does not quote prices, deposits or cancellation rules alongside the tours.

Awards and reputation

The About page shows Traveler's Choice badges for every year from 2021 to 2026, a World Travel Award for 2024 and Certificates of Excellence for 2015 to 2019. The review statistics differ between pages (an advisor page cites "10,000+ reviews & 98.8% 5-star rating"), so they are best read as the company's own summary rather than a fixed count.

What the site leaves open, and who it suits

The biggest gap is cost. None of the sample tours on the homepage shows a price, so a traveler has to ask an advisor for a quote. Deposit amounts, payment schedule and cancellation terms are left to the Terms page and the advisor. The site also does not say which meals or hotel categories a standard trip includes, or give meeting points, since each trip is built to order.

China Highlights suits travelers who want a private guide and driver throughout, a single advisor to plan with, and help making sense of a large country, whether on a first classic loop of Beijing, Xi'an, Guilin and Shanghai or a longer Silk Road or Tibet itinerary. Travelers who prefer to compare fixed prices online, or who want to join a shared group departure, will find the advisor-led model slower.
