An Indian tour operator under a historic name
Cox & Kings at coxandkings.com is an Indian travel company selling escorted group tours and tailor-made holidays abroad. Its About page tells the history of the name from 1758, when Richard Cox founded the firm as a "trusted travel and logistics partner to the British Armed Forces and aristocracy", through a 2008 milestone as "India's top outbound travel brand", to a hard patch: in 2019 "Cox & Kings enters insolvency under previous management, which was subsequently resolved through the National Company Law Tribunal." Since then, the page says, "In 2024, the Cox & Kings brand was acquired by Wilson & Hughes India Private Limited," which it describes as a global business and investments conglomerate. Payments go to Wilson & Hughes India Private Limited.
The timeline in between is long. The page says that by 1815 Cox & Co. had become agents to the Household Brigade, the Royal Artillery and most of the British Army's regiments, that in 1931 it arranged Mahatma Gandhi's journey to Europe for the Round Table Conference, and that in 1934 it "Pioneered organised group travel". It sums up the heritage as "Churchill's journeys. Mallory's. Gandhi's." and opens with the claim that it is "The first ever travel company in the world."
The company runs its trips from India. Prices are in Indian rupees, the sample group tour includes return flights from Delhi, and the homepage promises "Indian & Dietary Meals" and "Complimentary Visa Assistance". The destination menu speaks of "Journeys across 100 destinations", grouped as Africa 10, America 6, Asia 19, Europe 25, Middle East 7 and Oceania 3, with a separate Indian Getaways section. Its About page describes the reach as "Over 100 destinations across all seven continents and ground relationships in each one of them that took decades to build." Contact is by phone on +91 8556001700, by WhatsApp or by email at holidays@coxandkings.com, with travel experts available "9am–9pm IST, every day".
Group tours and tailor-made trips
The site offers "Two ways to see the world": escorted group tours ("Expert-led, fixed departures") and tailor-made journeys ("Designed entirely around you"). The group tours page lists 55 handcrafted journeys, described as "Escorted, fixed-departure trips with a tour manager throughout and like-minded company", and the tailor-made page lists 136, where "every hotel, guide and experience" is chosen for the traveler. An assistant called Einaya helps visitors decide between the two, or they can book a call with a specialist. Footer links cover All Inclusive Vacations, International Immersions and Indian Getaways.
A sample trip: Bali Bliss Escape
The Bali Bliss Escape group tour shows the format in detail. It runs 7 days and 6 nights, with 4 nights in Kuta and 2 in Ubud, and is listed as both a Group Tour and a Family Getaway, starting from ₹72,450 per person. Inclusions are economy return flights from Delhi, 4-star hotels, daily breakfast, a welcome drink and private transfers. The highlights list water sports in Kuta, the Uluwatu Temple above the Indian Ocean, a full-day Nusa Penida west island tour with local lunch, Kelingking Beach and Broken Beach, a Kintamani Highlands tour with the Mount Batur viewpoint and a coffee plantation, Tegenungan Waterfall, the Ubud Art Market and a floating breakfast in Ubud. The day-by-day plan starts with a local representative meeting guests at Ngurah Rai International Airport for a private transfer to the Bliss Surfer hotel in Kuta "or similar", and gives day 4 in Kuta and most of day 6 in Ubud over to leisure.
Not included are tips and personal expenses, entrance fees not listed in the inclusions, meals beyond those in the day-by-day program, and costs from itinerary changes caused by weather, illness or flight cancellations. The dates panel shows fixed departures, with 15 seats available on the 13 February departure, and notes that "Nothing is charged yet" until a specialist confirms dates and pricing. The trip page shows "4.9 from 2,400+ verified reviews", with "4.8 on Google 4.9 on Tripadvisor".
How the company looks after travelers
The About page has a short list of what it calls "the little things":
- Pace. "Every itinerary tells you how much walking there is, how many early starts, and how many stairs."
- Food. "Indian, Jain and other dietary meals, arranged in advance based on what you tell us at booking."
- Older travelers. For those traveling with parents: "Lifts over stairs, easier transfer times, rooms near the lobby and a tour manager who knows the drill."
- Support. "There'll always be someone you can reach throughout the trip, in your time zone, and in ours."
The homepage adds certified tour managers and 24x7 travel support, and shows an overall rating of 4.5 "based on reviews through 2025–2026", alongside awards it lists as "India's Favourite Tour Operator, PATA Gold & more".
Booking and payment terms
The Bali page sets out the payment schedule for international tours: a 35% advance, which is non-refundable, at booking; 75% of the total cost 60 days before departure; and 100% 45 days before departure. Airfare must be paid in full at booking, is quoted at proposal stage and can change at ticketing, and its cancellation terms are given when tickets are issued. Payments are accepted only through a secure link from Cox & Kings or by NEFT, RTGS or cheque to Wilson & Hughes India Private Limited; the company warns that it does not accept personal UPI IDs, WhatsApp QR codes or transfers to individual staff, and that official emails come only from @coxandkings.com addresses. Refund and Cancellation Policy pages are linked in the footer. The footer also invites businesses to become a franchise partner or a preferred sales partner.
What the site leaves open
The homepage promises travel "with a small group", but the site gives no maximum group size; the one departure shown lists 15 seats available without giving a total. The cancellation scale itself sits on the Cancellation Policy page rather than on the trip page, beyond the non-refundable 35% advance.
Who it suits
This Cox & Kings suits travelers based in India who want an escorted holiday abroad with flights from home, Indian or Jain meals, visa help and a tour manager throughout, or a tailor-made trip planned by phone or WhatsApp.
It suits less well anyone who wants a stated cap on group size before paying the non-refundable advance.
