What Fjord Tours is and where it operates

Fjord Tours is a Norwegian tour operator based in Bergen (the footer gives Fjord Tours AS, Starvhusgaten 4) and the company behind Norway in a Nutshell. Its About page says it has helped travelers explore Norway since 1982 and that it puts together "self-guided tours, activities, and accommodation across the country, all planned by our local team, who know the routes, the trains, and the seasons". So it is an operator of packaged journeys rather than of guided group tours: it books the trains, fjord boats, buses and hotels into one itinerary, and travelers follow it on their own. The destination menu covers Bergen, Flåm, Oslo, Ålesund, Stavanger and Geiranger, and the tours reach the Nærøyfjord, Sognefjord, Hardangerfjord, Geirangerfjord, Preikestolen and Trondheim. Prices show in Norwegian kroner by default, with USD, EUR, GBP and AUD in the currency switcher, and the site runs in English, Norwegian and German.

The About page tells the history plainly. The company started in Bergen in 1982 with a printed discount book called Fjord Pass, and in 2001 it "took over the packaged round trips that had been run by the railway, including Norway in a Nutshell". It began with a handful of people in an office at Bergen railway station booking trips by hand, later built its own booking technology, and says travelers from 139 countries toured with it between 2006 and 2018. The tours

The homepage bestsellers show the range and the starting prices. Norway in a Nutshell, "the classic journey", covers the UNESCO Nærøyfjord, Flåm and the Bergen Railway, runs year-round and is listed from 2698 NOK. Sognefjord in a Nutshell is the "slow and comfortable" version on Norway's longest fjord, from 1 day, April to October, starting from Oslo or Bergen, from 2745 NOK. Hardangerfjord in a Nutshell is a round trip from Bergen to fjord villages, orchards and the Vøringsfossen waterfall, from 1991 NOK. Geirangerfjord in a Nutshell runs from 2 days and starts from Oslo, Bergen or Ålesund, from 3337 NOK.

For longer trips, Geirangerfjord and Norway in a Nutshell runs from 3 days between June and September, from 8459 NOK. Preikestolen and Norway in a Nutshell adds an "adventure to Preikestolen" from May to September, from 7100 NOK, and Cities and Coastal Cruise is a Trondheim, Oslo and Bergen round trip from 4 days, from 11931 NOK. The homepage says bookings for 2027 are open, and there is a separate winter tours section.

Alongside the tours the site sells single activities, with the Borgund Stave Church tour, the Stegastein Viewpoint tour and Geirangerfjord and Trollstigen as its popular picks, plus fjord cruises, hiking, kayaking and car ferry tickets. Hotels and accommodation can be booked through the same system. The homepage's "Find your kind of Norway" section widens the net to food tours, city breaks and northern lights, and its travel guides cover the famous fjords and autumn travel, when the site says there are fewer visitors than in summer.

How a self-guided journey works

Because the tours are self-guided, there is no group and no tour leader. The homepage says "all connections are handled; you just enjoy the journey", and that travelers can customize a trip at booking by adding "extra days, hotels, and guided experiences". The About page's mission is to get travelers onto trains, boats and buses rather than cars and planes, and the homepage mentions electric buses among the connections. A traveler review on that page mentions a slow version with overnight stays in Vatnahalsen and Gudvangen, which shows how the hotel add-ons are used.

The site's Flåm Railway guide gives a taste of the classic route: the line drops from Myrdal station, 867 meters up, to the fjord village of Flåm in under 1 hour, through 20 tunnels, and opened in 1940.

Luggage transfer is the most practical extra. On tours between Oslo and Bergen, bags are left at the hotel reception before 6:00 a.m. (the page says most hotels will take them the evening before) and collected at the destination hotel by 9:00 p.m. the same day, with emails when they are picked up and delivered. The page notes that travelers must stay at the hotels the luggage is sent to, that the service is run by a subcontractor whose insurer handles any damage, and that it is available all year.

What the site leaves open, and who it suits

The tour cards show a starting price and season but not what the price includes, such as which travel class or whether any meals are part of it, and several cards give no duration. Cancellation charges, deadlines and refund rules are handled in the FAQ and Terms and Conditions rather than on the tour cards, so they are worth reading before paying. The FAQ asks whether travelers can bring a wheelchair, but the tour cards do not describe step-free access for each leg.

Fjord Tours suits travelers who want Norway's classic rail and fjord routes planned end to end with the connections handled, and who are happy to travel without a guide. Anyone who wants a guide alongside the whole way, or a small-group departure with fellow travelers, will find only guided add-ons here, since the core product is independent travel.
